Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 11 seed, saved a match point as she edged out Egyptian Mayar Sherif 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8) to reach the second round of the China Open on Monday.
Kasatkina, ranked No 13, will face Chinese Xinyu Wang next.
