Arthur Gea’s first Masters 1000 campaign became a breakthrough on Tuesday night, the 21-year-old Frenchman beating Czech No. 13 seed Jakub Mensik 7-6 (4), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters 1000.

Ranked No. 56, Gea is now guaranteed to rise to at least No. 44, a top 50 debut. He will face Pole Hubert Hurkacz or Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No. 25 seed.

He beat a top seed in straight sets for the second round running. He opened with a 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2 win over Portuguese Jaime Faria and beat compatriot Ugo Humbert, the No. 30 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, before beating American No. 3 seed Ben Shelton 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) in the third round for the biggest win of his career over the World No. 4. Mensik, ranked No. 15, took his record against top 20 opponents to 4-1.

Serve dominated the opening set, and with neither player able to break, it went to a tiebreak. Gea dropped the first point of the tiebreak on his own serve, then swept the next six, including two mini-breaks against Mensik. It was the same composure under pressure he had shown in his two tiebreaks against Shelton.

The second set followed the same tight pattern, and it was Gea who came under pressure first. He faced a break point at 1-2 and needed five game points to hold his second service game. The Czech’s serve gradually lost its bite, and his nerves began to show at 2-2, when he badly mishit a smash at deuce. Gea pounced, breaking on his third opportunity of the game with a brilliant passing shot.

Mensik, a quarterfinalist in Shanghai in 2024, had beaten Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-3 and Argentinian No. 21 seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The defeat ended his 21-match winning run on hard courts against players ranked outside the top 50 and his bid to become the youngest man to reach multiple quarterfinals at the event.

Arthur Gea’s year: from No. 241 to Masters 1000 quarterfinalist

Gea began the season ranked No. 241. He qualified for his Grand Slam main draw debut at the Australian Open, won his first Challenger title in Noumea and reached Challenger finals in Zadar and Granby.

He then won his first ATP title in Los Cabos, a run that took him into the top 100. At the US Open, he lost in the final round of qualifying but entered the main draw as a lucky loser and reached the fourth round, matching the best run by a lucky loser at a Grand Slam. He won three matches in Beijing before arriving at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, where his win over Mensik extended his tour-level record since July to 13-2.
