Russian Liudmila Samsonova advanced to the quarter-finals of the China Open by edging out Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-5 at National Tennis Center in Beijing on Wednesday night.
Samsonova, ranked No 22, will play Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 13 seed, next.
In the previous rounds of the Beijing tournament, the Russian won against American Alycia Parks (6-4, 7-6 (4)) and No 12 seed Petra Kvitova (6-4, 7-5).
Kostyuk, ranked No 44, edged out Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto (1-6, 6-3, 6-4) and defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 7 seed (7-6 (5), 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
