Dane Holger Rune, the top seed, edged out Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6) to reach the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors at the Halle Saint-Jacques in Basel on Friday evening.
Rune, ranked No 6, will face the winner of the match between Russian qualifier Alexander Shevchenko and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 6 seed, next.
The Dane, who benefitted from a net-cord winner at 6-6 in the final-set tiebreak, is closing in on a place in the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
The 20-year-old Dane won against Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (1-6, 7-5, 6-3) and Argentinian Sebastian Baez (7-6 (2), 6-1) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Basel tournament, Etcheverry, ranked No 32, defeated American Sebastian Korda, the No 8 seed (6-3, 1-6, 6-3) and Andy Murray (6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2).
