WTA Finals: Rain suspends Sabalenka v Swiatek until Sunday

The much-anticipated semi-final clash between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek at the WTA Finals in Cancun has been suspended due to rain, with the match on serve at 2-1 on Saturday evening

Persistent rain has interrupted play throughout the week in Mexico, with several short breaks in the first semi-final of the day, despite that match lasting less than an hour as Jessica Pegula blasted past Coco Gauff to book her spot in the final.

Whoever wins out of Sabalenka and Swiatek will likely have to play both their semi-final and final on the same day to make up time, putting them at a significant disadvantage – one that is only mitigated by the fact that Pegula also has doubles duty on Sunday, as well as the singles final.

The clash between Sabalenka and Swiatek could well determine who ends the year No 1 in the rankings as well. If Sabalenka wins, she’ll retain her No 1 ranking; if Swiatek wins then goes on to beat Pegula in the final, she’ll reclaim the spot she held for the first eight months of 2023.
