Australian wildcard Arina Rodionova advanced to the last 16 of the Brisbane International by winning against American Sofia Kenin, the No 14 seed, 7-5, 7-6 (7) on Tuesday night.
Rodionova is 34 years old and has never been ranked within the world’s top 100, and yet she turned it on in front of a home crowd on Tuesday to send the former world No 4 packing. The Australian, currently ranked No 113, will face the winner of the match between Mirra Andreeva and No 4 seed Liudmila Samsonova next.
Ahead of her victory, the 34-year-old defeated Italian Martina Trevisan (6-3, 6-2).
