Russian Alexander Shevchenko, the No 6 seed, edged out qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the second round of the Montpellier Open at the Sud de France Arena.
Shevchenko, ranked No 59, will play Gregoire Barrere next.
