Naomi Osaka advanced to the last eight of the Qatar Open after Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko withdrew before the match at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.
She will face the winner of the match between Karolina Pliskova and Linda Noskova next.
The Japanese won against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 15 seed (7-5, 6-4) and Croat Petra Martic (6-3, 7-6 (9)) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Tsurenko, ranked No 37, defeated wildcard Zeynep Sonmez (7-5, 6-3) and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 4 seed (6-3, 6-2).
