Murray downs Shapovalov in Dubai for 500th hard-court win

Andy Murray moved into the second round of the Dubai Open by beating Canadian Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Monday afternoon.

Murray, ranked No 67, will face the winner of the match between wildcard Gael Monfils and No 5 seed Ugo Humbert next.

It’s just his second win of the year but his 500th win on Tour, putting him in a select group alongside Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal to achieve the feat.

“Yeah, it’s not bad,” Murray said. “Obviously hard courts has been a great surface for me over the years and 500 is a lot of matches. I’m very proud of that. The list…there’s not many players who have done that. Great to get to 500 before I’m done.”
