Nadal withdraws from Indian Wells: “I can’t lie to myself”

Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from Indian Wells ahead of the first round, citing a lack of readiness ahead of the Masters 1000 event.

“It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament at Indian Wells,” said Nadal in a post on his X account on Wednesday evening. 

“Everyone knows how much I love this place and how much I love to play here. That’s also one of the reasons why I came very early to the desert to practice and try to get ready.”

The Spaniard continued to explain his withdrawal on X, saying, “I have been working hard and practicing and you all know I took a test this weekend but I don’t find myself ready to play at the highest level at such an important event.”

“It is not an easy decision, it’s a tough one as a matter of fact but I can’t lie to myself and lie to the thousands of fans,” Nadal said. “I will miss you all and I am sure the tournament will be a great success.”

The withdrawal is a big hit for the 22-time Grand Slam champions chances of making a return in time for a competitive Roland-Garros campaign in May. He will be replaced in the BNP Paribas Open draw by lucky loser Sumit Nagal, who lost a tight final qualifying match 7-6 in the third yesterday to Hong Seong-chan.
