Alex de Minaur missed his chance to move into the last qualifying place for the Nitto ATP Finals on Wednesday, beaten 7-6, 6-3 by Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round of the Paris Masters 1000. The Australian eighth seed needed one win to overtake Rafael Jodar, ninth in the Race to Turin.
Etcheverry saved 12 of the 13 break points he faced and converted two of his three, according to Flashscore. He will face Novak Djokovic or qualifier Rinky Hijikata in the last 16.
What de Minaur’s defeat means for the Race to Turin
De Minaur, who had a first-round bye, stays on 3,170 points in the Race, behind the 3,234 of Jodar, who lost 6-3, 6-4 to Casper Ruud on Tuesday. With Jannik Sinner out for the rest of the season, ninth place is the last place in.
Jodar now stays ninth unless Djokovic or Taylor Fritz reaches the semi-finals or Tommy Paul reaches the final in Paris, according to Tennis Majors calculations based on the official ATP totals.
