Some victories tip the balance. After breaking even in 2024 – with seven wins and as many losses – Caroline Garcia went from strength to strength by putting an end to Naomi Osaka‘s run in Miami on Sunday.

After defeating the former world No 1 at the Australian Open and then losing to her in Doha, the 27th-ranked Frenchwoman won 7-6(4), 7-5 in Florida to reach the fourth round of the Miami Open. All the more reason to add a little more weight to a confidence that’s in the process of building muscle.

“It was a good match,” Garcia said, first reported by L’Équipe. “Lately, I’ve been mentally stable, optimistic about my game, confident in what I’m doing and fully committed to it. We know that the tennis is still there and that I’m playing well.”

“After that, you have to succeed in making points one after the other, remain optimistic after a fault, and not get frustrated,” she continued. “Today (Sunday) shows that I’m capable of being in that frame of mind, I’m capable of producing good tennis.”

Gauff next in the firing line

Garcia is now aiming to reach her first individual quarter-final – she played in the semi-finals of the United Cup with France – since October in Beijing, the last tournament in which she won three consecutive matches.

To do so, she will have to overcome Coco Gauff on Monday. A player who will recall to Caroline Garcia fond memories of her fantastic end of season 2022.

In her last two encounters with Coco Gauff, the30-year-old won – at the US Open, to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final, and then to begin her triumphant run at the Masters, the biggest title of her career.

Since then, however, Gauff has turned a corner by winning the 2023 US Open. The kind of title that carries a lot of weight.
