Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, won the Madrid Open trophy by edging out Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7) at the Caja Magica.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, defeated Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-1, 6-4), Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 27 seed (6-1, 6-1), Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-1, 6-0), Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed (4-6, 6-0, 6-2) and American Madison Keys, the No 18 seed (6-1, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Sabalenka, ranked No 2, beat Pole Magda Linette (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), American wildcard Robin Montgomery (6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4), American Danielle Collins, the No 13 seed (4-6, 6-4, 6-3), Russian Mirra Andreeva (6-1, 6-4) and Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 4 seed (1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5)).
