Birmingham Open: Tomljanovic through to first final in five years

Australian Ajla Tomljanovic won against Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 7 seed, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to move into the final of the Birmingham Open at Edgbaston Priory Club on Saturday.

Tomljanovic, ranked No 190 and a two-time quarter-finalist at Wimbledon, will play Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in Sunday’s final.

Ahead of her win today, the Australian beat Russian Anna Blinkova (6-2, 6-1), Chinese Lin Zhu (6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 6 seed (1-6, 6-3, 6-2).

This is Tomjlanovic’s first final on the WTA Tour since 2019 and she will be aiming to win her first WTA singles title on Sunday.

Potapova, ranked No 36, defeated qualifier Elina Avanesyan (6-4, 6-4), Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-3, 7-5) and second seed Barbora Krejcikova (6-1, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Birmingham tournament.
