Heartbreak for Michelsen as Giron saves MP to win Newport title
Marcos Giron defeated Alex Michelsen in the Newport final on Sunday evening, saving a championship point en route to victory

Second seed Marcos Giron won the Hall of Fame Open tournament by edging out No 3 seed Alex Michelsen 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum in Newport on Sunday evening.
Michelsen came within inches of winning the title, with the 19-year-old holding a championship point at 5-4, 30-40 on Giron’s serve. Giron fired down an ace followed by back-to-back forehand winners to close out the game, before breaking Michelsen in the very next game.
He went on to win the set 7-5 to claim his first ATP singles title.
This time last year, Michelsen also fell short in the Newport final, the only other time he’s made it this far in an ATP tournament.
Giron, ranked No 46, beat Frenchman Benoit Paire (4-6, 7-5, 6-4), Australian qualifier Alex Bolt (6-4, 6-1) and No 4 seed Christopher Eubanks (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Michelsen, ranked No 61, defeated Maxime Cressy (6-4, 6-4), Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-4, 6-4) and wildcard Reilly Opelka (6-2, 6-0).
