US Open: Mertens comes from behind to beat Keys in third round

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 33 seed, came from behind to beat American Madison Keys, the No 14 seed, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Friday to moved into the last 16 of the US Open.

This was notably Mertens’ second comeback win of the tournament as she won against Russian Veronika Kudermetova (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) in the first round before beating Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (6-3, 6-2) in the second.

Keys, ranked No 14, beat Katerina Siniakova (6-4, 6-1) and Australian qualifier Maya Joint (6-4, 6-0) in the previous rounds.

Mertens, ranked No 35, will face the winner of the match between Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 29 seed, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, next.
