Japan Open: Fils makes quarters after Berrettini retires injured

Frenchman Arthur Fils reached the quarter-finals of the Japan Open when Italian Matteo Berrettini retired at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Friday.
Fils, ranked No 24, led 6-7 (5), 0-0 when Berrettini, ranked No 45, pulled out due to discomfort in his abdomen area.
The 20-year-old Frenchman will play American Ben Shelton, the No 8 seed, next.
Arthur Fils beat American Taylor Fritz, the top seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) in the previous round of the Tokyo Open.
In the previous round of the Tokyo Open, the Italian won against Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 6-4).
