American Varvara Lepchenko reached the last eight of the Dow Tennis Classic by edging out Japanese qualifier Haruka Kaji 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday.
Lepchenko, ranked No 142, will face wildcard Lauren Davis next.
In the previous round, the 38-year-old American edged out Canadian Marina Stakusic, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3)).
Kaji, ranked No 282, won against qualifier Emily Appleton (6-1, 6-4) in the previous round.
