Swiss Simona Waltert reached the last 16 of the L & T Mumbai Open when Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean, the No 7 seed, retired on Tuesday night.
Waltert, ranked No 161, led 3-0 when Jeanjean, ranked No 123, pulled out on Tuesday night.
The Swiss will face the winner of the match between Japanese qualifier Mei Yamaguchi and Israeli Lina Glushko next.
