French lucky loser Selena Janicijevic defeated American Varvara Lepchenko, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) to advance to the quarter-finals of the Cancun Tennis Open on Wednesday.
Janicijevic, ranked No 176, will play Colombian Emiliana Arango next.
The 22-year-old Frenchman won against Spaniard Irene Burillo Escorihuela (6-3, 6-4) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Lepchenko, ranked No 125, won against Maria Mateas (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).
