In a virtual dead rubber at UTS Guadalajara , Tomas Machac defeated fellow Czech Jakub Mensik 17-10, 18-12, 13-16, 20-9 at the Centro Panamericano de Tenis on Saturday evening. The “Air Machete” is the winner of Group B with a perfect 3-0 record in round-robin competition.
Machac had already clinched the top spot in this foursome even prior to facing his compatriot. Meanwhile, Mensik — the “Menimal” — had already been eliminated from semi-final contention at 0-2. Adding insult to injury, Mensik was under the weather.
“Jakub was injured; he was sick,” Machac noted. “It wasn’t easy to play. He couldn’t move well. I feel sorry for him. I was looking forward to playing a real match, not like in these conditions.
“I was feeling good at the beginning of this match. But after that I completely lost it. The altitude is tough. But the atmosphere is great — almost a [full] stadium. Everyone is coming to cheer (for) us and we are trying our best.”
Flavio Cobolli and David Goffin will go head-to-head later in the day for second place in Group B.
