Comesana defeats Heide in three-hour Rio Open marathon

Argentina’s Francisco Comesana battled past Brazil’s Gustavo Heide 7-6 (2), 6-7 (7), 6-3 to reach the second round of the Rio Open at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Monday night.

After fighting off three set points in the second-set tiebreak, Comesana had a match point at 7-6. Heide, however, saved it and eventually forced a decider. To the chagrin of the home crowd, though, Heide could not maintain momentum. Comesana broke serve right away in the third before ultimately triumphing after three hours and 21 minutes.

Comesana, ranked No 86, will next face sixth-seeded Chilean Nicolas Jarry.
