Medvedev records 300th hard-court win to make quarter-finals in Doha

Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 4 seed, defeated Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-2, 6-1 to move into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Wednesday.

Medvedev needed just 57 minutes to end Bergs’ resistance. He did it by hitting four aces and converting five break points, keeping his serve unchallenged throughout.

The result notably marked the Russian’s 300th win on the hard courts.

“Competition is a drug,” Medvedev said after the match. “Competition is adrenaline. A lot of things I do even outside of tennis is a competition. Sometimes video games. Sometimes something less. Sometimes arguing with my wife who’s right. Competition is my life. I love it. Other than that, it’s gonna be tough to find more things to enjoy when you have two kids and when you’ve already played some years. Competition is the most important for me.”

Medvedev, ranked No 6, will play Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime next.

The Russian won against Karen Khachanov (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Doha tournament, Bergs, ranked No 58, beat Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (6-4, 7-6 (4)).
