Australian qualifier Maya Joint advanced to the quarter-finals of the Mérida Open Akron by defeating Croat Donna Vekic, the No 5 seed, 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday night.
Joint, ranked No 103, will face Armenian Elina Avanesyan next.
The 18-year-old Australian won against Austrian Julia Grabher (6-3, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
