American Mackenzie McDonald reached the second round of the Houston Open by edging out Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4 at River Oaks Country Club on Tuesday.
McDonald, ranked No 100, will play No 4 seed Brandon Nakashima next.
