Madrid Masters: Paul edges past Fonseca to book spot in third round
Tommy Paul won against Joao Fonseca 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) on Saturday evening and will face Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 24 seed, in the next round

American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, came through a tough battle with Brazilian Joao Fonseca 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) to move into the third round of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Mágica.
Paul, ranked No 12, will face Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 24 seed, next. Fonseca had two set points in both sets but Paul stood firm to advance to the next round.
“I thought the level was awesome from the jump. He really had me on my toes,” Paul said, quoted by the ATP Tour website. “He was in every single one of my service games in the first set and he was pushing the pressure in the match very well. I was happy to get through those service games. My serve bailed me out quite a bit in the first set.”
In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Fonseca, ranked No 65, beat Dane qualifier Elmer Moller (6-2, 6-3).
