Madrid Masters: Medvedev breezes past Juan Manual Cerundolo to reach last 16

Daniil Medvedev, the No 9 seed, won against Argentinian qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-2, 6-2 to move into the last 16 of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Mágica.

The Russian was playing his first match at this year’s tournament, having received a bye in the first round and his second-round opponent, Laslo Djere, withdrawing from the tournament prior to their match.

It was a very straightforward afternoon’s work for the Russian, who broke twice in each set without reply against the qualifier to breeze into the last 16.

Medvedev, ranked No 10, will face American Brandon Nakashima, the No 31 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the Russian benefited from the forfeit of Serb Laslo Djere.

Cerundolo, ranked No 126, beat American Aleksandar Kovacevic (3-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 18 seed (7-6 (5), 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
