Italian Matteo Arnaldi beat American Frances Tiafoe, the No 16 seed, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Mágica on Wednesday afternoon.
Arnaldi, ranked No 44, will play the winner of the match between No 5 seed Jack Draper and American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the Italian won against Croat qualifier Borna Coric (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 4 seed (6-3, 6-4) and Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (6-3, 6-4).
Tiafoe, ranked No 17, benefited from the abandonment of Italian Luciano Darderi (7-5, 3-1) and defeated Frenchman Alexandre Muller (6-3, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
