Osaka lifts maiden clay-court title by winning Saint Malo
The four-time Grand Slam champion’s choice to take a wildcard paid off with a title lift

Japanese Naomi Osaka, the second seed, won the L’Open 35 de Saint Malo trophy by defeating Slovenian Kaja Juvan 6-1, 7-5 on Sunday afternoon.
By virtue of winning the tournament, Osaka will re-enter the world’s top 50 and gain crucial confidence – heading into Roland Garros.
The four-time Grand Slam champion took a wildcard into the event after losing in the first-round of Madrid, to Lucia Bronzetti.
In the previous rounds, Osaka, ranked No 55, beat Croat Petra Marcinko (6-2, 6-1), Frenchwoman Diane Parry (2-6, 6-3, 6-4), Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot (6-3, 6-4) and Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean (6-2, 4-6, 6-0).
Kaja Juvan beat Belgian Greet Minnen, the No 5 seed (6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3), Swiss Celine Naef (2-6, 6-2, 6-2), American Katie Volynets, the No 3 seed (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) and Swiss Viktorija Golubic, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
