American Sebastian Korda, the No 22 seed, won against Australian Aleksandar Vukic 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Rome Masters at the Foro Italico in Roma on Saturday.
Korda, ranked No 23, will play the winner of the match between American Ben Shelton, the No 12 seed, and Spaniard Jaume Munar next.
In the previous round of the Italian Open, Vukic, ranked No 79, defeated American qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran (7-6 (2), 6-2).
