Italian Open: Gauff dominates Raducanu to reach quarter-finals

Coco Gauff beat Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-2 on Monday and will play the winner of the match between Dane Clara Tauson, the No 22 seed, and Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 7 seed, in the next round

American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, reached the last eight of the Italian Open by winning against Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-2 at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday afternoon.

Gauff, ranked No 3, will play the winner of the match between Dane Clara Tauson, the No 22 seed, and Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 7 seed, next.

After the American’s win, she stated:

“Emma is a tough opponent no matter what surface and always tough to play – so I’m happy with how I played.

“My level is getting better every match and [reaching the] Madrid [final] was a step in the right direction.

“Today I think my forehand was a big weapon, set me up for a lot of short balls and a lot of good points.”

The 21-year-old American defeated Canadian qualifier Victoria Mboko (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Pole Magda Linette, the No 32 seed (7-5, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Rome tournament.

Earlier in the tournament, Raducanu, ranked No 49, beat Australian qualifier Maya Joint (7-5, 6-7 (1), 6-3), Swiss lucky loser Jil Teichmann (6-2, 6-2) and Russian Veronika Kudermetova (5-7, 6-0, 6-1).
