Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros by winning against Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 17 seed, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 at Roland-Garros in Paris on Monday evening.

Having won his three previous matches in straight sets, Sinner carried on the way he left off against Jiri Lehecka, blowing Rublev away in the opening set with a 5-0 lead in a matter of minutes.

While the Russian did regain his footing and push somewhat in the third set – adopting a much more aggressive approach and attempting to fight Sinner’s fire with fire – this was again a routine victory for the world No 1.

The result means that Sinner has now won 18 Grand Slam matches in a row, and is through to the quarter-finals where he will face surprise package Alexander Bublik, who upset Jack Draper earlier on Monday.

Italian efficiency

Sinner, was brilliant behind his serve, winning 81 per cent of first serve points and 77 per cent of second serves. On return, he was brutal, punishing Rublev’s second serves and winning 22 of 31 points.

The Italian was also efficient on the big points, converting five of his eight break points and defending all three that he faced – two of which came in the opening game of the match.

Combine this with his strength off the ground – just 19 unforced errors to Rublev’s 39 – and it’s no wonder this clash finished in two hours flat.

Ahead of his victory, the Italian defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (6-4, 6-3, 7-5), French wildcard Richard Gasquet (6-3, 6-0, 6-4) and Jiri Lehecka (6-0, 6-1, 6-2).

Rublev, ranked No 15, beat South African qualifier Lloyd Harris (6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1), Australian Adam Walton (7-6 (1), 6-1, 7-6 (5)) and Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 14 seed (W/O) in the previous rounds of the Roland-Garros 2025.
