For his first match since Roland-Garros, Sinner scores a win against Hanfmann

There’s nothing like a victory to forget about defeat! Just a few days after losing the Roland-Garros final to Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner defeated Yannick Hanfmann this Tuesday in the first round of the Halle tournament (7-5, 6-3).

It’s the defending champion’s first grass-court win of the season in Halle, and his 19th victory of 2025. A perfectly controlled match from the world No. 1, who didn’t lose his serve once. In the first set, he avoided a dangerous tiebreak by breaking his opponent’s serve at 6-5 on his third break point opportunity.

He also stayed sharp in the second set, when Yannick Hanfmann earned two break points on his serve in the opening game. Then he punished the German by breaking him to take a 4-2 lead — an advantage he held onto to close out the match.

Sinner will face Bublik in the next round

With 27 winners and 16 unforced errors, Jannik Sinner delivered a flawless performance for his grass-court debut. A victory that will surely lift his spirits after admitting he still thinks about the three match points he had in the Roland-Garros final.

“I’m very happy, he’s a great player and breaking him is very difficult so I’m happy the Way I handled the situation. It’s never easy when you’re playing your first match on grass, it takes time to find your game on it. I’m trying yo stay calm on the court.” said Sinner on the court.

The Italian will face Alexander Bublik in the next round of the German tournament. It will be the sixth meeting between the two on the ATP Tour. Sinner currently leads the head-to-head 4-1.
