Berlin Open: Wang into last four as Badosa retires with injury

Xinyu Wang progressed as Paula Badosa was forced to retire in Berlin. She’ll play either Amanda Anisimova or Liudmila Samsonova in the next round

Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang reached the last four of the Berlin Open when Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 8 seed, retired injured at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club.

Wang, ranked No 49, led 6-1, 0-0 when Badosa, ranked No 10, pulled out at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club on Friday.

The Chinese will face the winner of the match between American Amanda Anisimova and Russian Liudmila Samsonova next.

Earlier in the tournament, Xinyu Wang defeated Australian Daria Kasatkina (6-3, 6-2) and American Coco Gauff, the second seed (6-3, 6-3).

The Spaniard won against German wildcard Eva Lys (6-1, 6-3) and American Emma Navarro (7-6 (2), 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Berlin tournament.
