Eastbourne Open: Pavlyuchenkova saved six match points to beat Tomova

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova edged out Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (7) on Monday and will face the winner of the match between American Sofia Kenin, the No 4 seed, and Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell in the next round

Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova edged out Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (7) to advance to the second round of the Eastbourne Open at the Devonshire Park Lawn Club on Monday.

After missing a match point at 5-4 in the second set, the Russian player had to save six match points in the third, one at 5-4 and five in the tie-break when Viktoriya Tomova was leading 6-1.

Pavlyuchenkova, ranked No 53, will play the winner of the match between American Sofia Kenin, the No 4 seed, and Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell next.
