Jarry continues family legacy, matches grandpa Fillol’s Wimbledon record: “I came here with him when I was 10”
Nicolas Jarry reached the fourth round of Wimbledon on Friday, just as his grandfather Jaime Fillal did in 1974

Nicolas Jarry matched his grandfather Jaime Fillol’s best run at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round on Friday.
Jarry, who entered the main draw through qualifiers, braved young sensation Joao Fonseca in four sets (6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4)) on Court 2 of SW19. The win put him on par with his grandpa Fillol, who reached the fourth round of the Championships in 1974 to record his best showing at the grass court Major.
Fillol defeated Czech Frantisek Pala, Argentinian Julian Ganzabal and Aussie Kim Warwick before falling to eventual champion Jimmy Connors in the fourth round during that run.
Jarry outdid No 8 seed Holger Rune (4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4) in the first round and downed American Learner (6-2, 6-2, 6-3) Tien in the second. After overcoming Fonseca on Friday, the Chilean recounted his visit to Wimbledon with his grandfather Fillol as a child.
“I came here with him when I was 10 years old and 11,” Jarry said in his post-match presser. “Since then, I’m in love with this tournament. So I’m happy to, yeah — every match that I win here makes me stay a couple more days in the tournament, and that makes me very happy. So this is the longest period that I’ve been, and hopefully I can continue playing a little bit more.”
Jarry, the former world No 16, will lock horns with local boy Cameron Norrie on Sunday for a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
