Four years after playing and winning his first final on the ATP Tour in Córdoba, Juan Manuel Cerundolo reached his second final this Saturday on the clay courts of Gstaad. The Argentine defeated Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse without ever being threatened on the scoreboard (6-3, 6-3) at the Roy Emerson Arena in Gstaad.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo played an almost flawless match, conceding just one break point—which he saved—in the first set. He also committed 14 fewer unforced errors than his opponent, who was inexperienced at this stage of competition and visibly more tense due to the stakes of qualifying for his first ATP final.

In the first set, the Argentine quickly secured a break to take a 3-1 lead. Managing the wind better than his opponent, Cerundolo maintained his advantage throughout and took the lead in this semifinal. Buse raised his level in the second set but cracked again on serve at 3-3.

Cerundolo even had the luxury of securing a double break to close out the match, capitalizing on one final unforced error from the Peruvian. The Argentine now sits virtually at No. 81 in the world rankings, just two spots away from his career-high.

“Today there was a lot of wind, so you had to play smart and adapt. I tried to add more topspin so the ball would bounce well. I served very well today, and winning in straight sets helps me save energy for tomorrow’s final,” said the day’s winner after the match.

Cerundolo, ranked No 109, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Arthur Cazaux and Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the second seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the Argentinian won against Norwegian Casper Ruud, the top seed (6-2, 1-6, 6-3), Belgian David Goffin, the No 6 seed (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) and German Jan-Lennard Struff (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).

Buse, ranked No 167, won against Argentinian Roman Andres Burruchaga (6-3, 3-6, 6-1), Pole Kamil Majchrzak (1-6, 7-5, 6-1) and Serb Laslo Djere, the No 5 seed (7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Gstaad tournament.
