Wildcard Mackenzie McDonald advanced to the second round of the Citi Open by defeating qualifier Colton Smith 6-4, 6-1 at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington on Monday evening.
His next opponent will be Ben Shelton, seed No. 4.
The Mubadala Citi DC Open once again serves as a showcase for American tennis, with 16 U.S. players in the men’s main draw, more than any other nation. Alongside headliners Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe is Mackenzie McDonald, returning to a tournament where he enjoyed a breakout semifinal run in 2021.
McDonald, one of the tour’s most versatile baseliners, joins a deep American contingent that includes rising stars like Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien, as well as former Top 20 player Reilly Opelka, back from injury.
