Learner Tien defeated wildcard Emilio Nava 6-1, 6-4 to move into the second round of the Citi Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington on Monday evening.
He will play against the No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev, next, who’s just reached the semi-final at Los Cabos.
The 56th edition of the Mubadala Citi DC Open kicks off with a loaded field that includes five Top 10 players and 16 Americans. Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe headline the U.S. roster, while Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, and Andrey Rublev bring international flair.
Two former champions, Gaël Monfils and Daniel Evans, return, with the latter receiving a wild card. Last year’s champion Sebastian Korda is out due to injury, leaving the title race wide open.
