Monfils in doubt after his withdrawal in Chengdu: “There’s a lot going on, a lot of questions…”
Injured in his right ankle, Gaël Monfils has already withdrawn from the Beijing tournament.

It’s not a good period for Gaël Monfils. At the start of his Asian tour, the Frenchman retired in the third set of his first-round match in Chengdu against Alexander Shevchenko (6-7, 6-3, 1-0 ret.). He injured his right ankle after a fall.
The 39-year-old player hasn’t won a single match on the ATP Tour since Wimbledon last July. Defeated in the first round in Washington and Toronto, he then withdrew from Cincinnati due to a left wrist injury. At the US Open, Gaël Monfils bowed out in the opening round after a five-set battle against Roman Safiullin.
“Well… it’s clearly not the best moment of my career right now, let’s be honest (there’s a lot going on, a lot of questions… but hey). Not the best vibes, not much luck, and today the ankle gives out, just bad luck. But honestly, I’m doing really well as a person and that’s what matters most,” the Frenchman wrote on his social media on Thursday.
“I’m still incredibly lucky to be able to play this high-level sport that I love so much. Even though my ankle stopped me today, I’m super grateful to everyone who works with me to keep me at my best. Thank you to everyone sending positive messages, I see them, I feel them, and it makes me so happy. Thank you so much for your support, truly.”
Gaël Monfils has withdrawn from the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, which begins next week. He hopes to return in time to compete at the Shanghai Masters 1000.
