Metz Open: Tien makes semi-finals, defeating Berrettini

Learner Tien beat Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday evening. He’ll face the winner of the match between French qualifier Clement Tabur and Ukrainian lucky loser Vitaliy Sachko in the next round

American Learner Tien defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 to move into the last four of the Metz Open at the Arènes de Metz on Thursday evening.

Tien, ranked No 38, will face the winner of the match between French qualifier Clement Tabur and Ukrainian lucky loser Vitaliy Sachko next.

The 19-year-old American won against Tunisian lucky loser Moez Echargui (7-6 (3), 6-3) and French wildcard Ugo Blanchet (6-3, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

He is the youngest semifinalist in Metz since Djokovic in 2006. This match was his30th win of the year and he’s the youngest American to win 30 matches in a season since Andy Roddick in 2002.
