Alex de Minaur appeared visibly shaken after his latest defeat at the ATP Finals against Lorenzo Musetti (7-5, 3-6, 7-5), expressing deep frustration with this loss, which he linked to numerous others he suffered throughout 2025.
“I don’t know how many times I can deal with a loss like this one,” said the Australian, his face pale and his voice filled with emotion. “I just have to talk to my team and try to sort out these issues because these are issues that can’t keep happening.”
“I mean, if I really want to be serious about taking the next step in my career, these matches, I can’t lose ’em. I just can’t. I mean, it feels like I’ve lost a lot of them this year. More than anything, it’s getting to a point where mentally it’s killing me.”
In the rarity of the ATP Finals format, where players must face the media regardless of results, De Minaur found it difficult to mask his emotions. “I think it’s probably a good thing I don’t express my feelings right now because they’re quite dark. It’s been that type of year where I’ve had what feels like a whole lot of matches that should have gone my way and just somehow don’t, so…”
De Minaur : “It’s going to eat me alive”
These quotes echoes several heartbreaking moments from this season, including his recent quarterfinal loss against Alexander Bublik at the Rolex Paris Masters, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5), the closely contested US Open quarterfinal versus Félix Auger-Aliassime (4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6), and probably a semifinal at Monte-Carlo against Musetti (7-6 in the third), a semifinal at Bastide UTS Nîmes against Machac (sudden death) and a Doha semifinal against Rublev (7-6 in the third).
De Minaur described the emotional toll of these defeats: “I keep putting everything into these matches. When the result’s not there, it’s hard to keep pushing through.”
He also dismissed any suggestion that crowd influence affected the outcome. Praising the atmosphere, which Musetti credited for the win, De Minaur stated: “It was on my racquet. It wasn’t the crowd’s fault. It was mine.”
“It’s something that if it doesn’t get sorted, it’s going to eat me alive. I need to get it sorted sooner rather than later,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Musetti informed that his press conference would be held at 1:00 a.m., more than an hour later—likely the time needed to absorb emotions opposite to De Minaur’s.
