Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No. 4 seed, beat Argentine qualifier Marco Trungelliti 6-4, 7-5 to reach the third round of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday evening, his first win of the North American hard-court swing after a second-round exit to Botic van de Zandschulp in Montreal last week.
Medvedev, ranked No. 6, will next face thee No. 27 seed Brandon Nakashima, runner-up in Montreal this week, who defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-2, 7-5).
The win was also a milestone one: Medvedev’s 100th career win in a Masters 1000 event on hard courts, a tally built on titles at five of the six hard-court events on the circuit, Cincinnati (2019), Shanghai (2019), Paris (2020), Canada (2021) and Miami (2023), with only Indian Wells missing from the set. It was his 32nd win of the season.

Trungelliti, ranked No. 90, had reached the second round by beating Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic 7-5, 7-6 (2).
