Ugo Humbert safely navigated his opening hurdle at the Open Occitanie on Tuesday evening, dispatching Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets to reach the round of 16. The 27-year-old Frenchman, currently ranked No 38 in the world, secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory on the indoor hard courts of the Sud de France Arena.
Seeded No 5 for this ATP 250 event, Humbert utilized his aggressive left-handed game to break the 30-year-old Van de Zandschulp at crucial moments in both sets. The Dutchman, ranked No 67, struggled to contain Humbert’s pace in the quick conditions of Montpellier.
Humbert’s win sets up a highly anticipated second-round encounter with compatriot Adrian Mannarino, who advanced earlier in the week. The clash between the two French left-handers ensures a local favorite will feature in the quarter-finals.
