The professional split between Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Alcaraz has fueled endless debate since the bombshell announcement shook the tennis world three months prior to this revelation. In a landmark sit-down for the video-podcast El Cafelito, hosted by prominent Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol , Ferrero – former world number one and the architect of Alcaraz’s rise – finally pulled back the curtain on the internal friction that ended the sport’s most successful modern partnership.

This sit-down represents Ferrero’s first major deep-dive since the parting, providing a rare look at the man behind the coach. Beyond the Alcaraz departure, the hour-long episode takes the form of a relaxed conversation where the duo covers Ferrero’s newfound passion for golf , the tragic loss of both his mother and father, and his rigid coaching philosophy.

We finally learn previously unknown details about his private battle with depression as a teenager following his mother’s passing and his internal struggle with being an introvert navigating a world of sudden fame after his 2000 Davis Cup win.

1. The Clash of Visions: Different Understanding of Sacrifice

The seeds of the split were sewn in a fundamental disagreement over what it takes to stay at the pinnacle of the sport. Ferrero, who explicitly describes himself as a meticulous and structured analyst, admitted that his vision of professional discipline often clashed with Alcaraz’s more relaxed approach.

Confirming a controversial sentiment from the Netflix documentary A mi manera, Ferrero stated, “his understanding of work and sacrifice is different from ours” (“su entendimiento del trabajo y del sacrificio es diferente al nuestro”).

He expressed genuine concern that Alcaraz’s penchant for frequent mental resets and vacations – such as his pre-Wimbledon trip to Ibiza – could hinder his ultimate legacy. Ferrero noted” “it makes me doubt if like that he can become the best in history”.

While Alcaraz has proven he can win with this method, Ferrero warned that for many, “such distractions, are often very tempting and can cause a player to lose focus”.

Ferrero was quick to strike down rumors that training logistics in Murcia were the cause of the rift. He flatly denied that he demanded Alcaraz remain at his academy or that Alcaraz’s desire to train in his hometown was a source of conflict. According to Ferrero, “the team had already accepted Alcaraz’s need to train more often in Murcia two years ago”, and he insisted there was no issue regarding an insistence on his own academy over Alcaraz’s preferences.

2. The Contractual Collapse: Why the Automatic Renewal Failed

A major revelation from the interview was the breakdown of their legal agreement. Ferrero explained that they operated on an annual contract that, if left untouched, renewed automatically.

However, the automaticity failed for the 2026 season because both sides entered active negotiations that reached a dead end. Ferrero kept the specific internal guidelines private but confirmed the split was a matter of irreconcilable terms:” I asked for certain conditions and on their part others were asked for and there has been no understanding” (“yo pedía unas condiciones y por la parte de ellos se pedían otras y no ha habido entendimiento”).

He described the two parties pulling in opposite directions, “a situation that ultimately spoiled a very beautiful story”.

3. The Shadow of the Environment: Family and Influence

Ferrero did not shy away from the role Alcaraz’s inner circle played in the separation. While the decision was ostensibly professional, Ferrero acknowledged that the collective mindset of the Alcaraz camp, including his family, shifted during the contract talks.

When asked if the player’s surroundings influenced the breakup, Ferrero only said: “the environment must have influenced it, of course”, (“el entorno habrá, habrá influido, por supuesto”). He emphasized that decisions of this magnitude are never made in a vacuum: “in the end I think the family, the environment, all these types of decisions are discussed”.

4. The Samuel López Dilemma: A Hurtful New Reality

Samuel López, described by Ferrero as his trusted person, is a veteran coach from the Equelite Academy who has worked alongside Ferrero for years. Having been part of Alcaraz’s development from a young age, López has now stepped into the primary mentorship role following the split.

While Ferrero maintains that he actually encouraged López to stay for the sake of the player’s stability, he admitted the personal toll it has taken. Ferrero confessed that seeing his confidant in the opposing box is a source of pain: “it hurts a little, it hurts a little”.

He noted the extreme difficulty of decoupling personal loyalty from professional duty: “it is very difficult to decouple one thing from the other”.

5. A Heart Prepared to Start Over: The Door Remains Open

To cope with the emotional weight of seeing his former team move on, Ferrero even unfollowed Alcaraz on Instagram, explaining: “I need a little time to separate”.

But despite the pain of the divorce, Ferrero’s love for the game and his former pupil remains evident. He spoke movingly about the bond they shared, particularly the embrace during the Miami tournament in 2022 following the sudden death of Ferrero’s father. Ferrero described the support from Alcaraz during that time as very affectionate and emotional.

While he is currently recharging at his Ferrero Equelite Academy in Villena, Ferrero admitted that his coaching career is far from over. In the interview’s most poignant moment, he left the door wide open for a future reunion with Alcaraz. “They say that second parts were never good, but there are some movies that are… in the depths of my heart I couldn’t tell him no”.
