Francisco Cerundolo survived a grueling three-set battle against Benjamin Bonzi on Saturday evening, prevailing 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (5) to advance to the round of 32 at the BNP Paribas Open. The Argentine world No 19 demonstrated elite physical conditioning and mental fortitude in the desert heat. He outlasted the French qualifier in a high-stakes final set tiebreak that spanned nearly three hours.
The victory sets up a compelling third-round clash against Great Britain’s Jack Draper, the tournament 14th seed and defending champion. Cerundolo enters the matchup with confidence, holding a 2-0 head-to-head lead over the Englishman, and will look to maintain his perfect record to secure a spot in the second week in California.
