Spanish top seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated Norwegian No 13 seed Casper Ruud 6-1, 7-6 (2) to reach the last eight of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday night.
The world No 1 produced a performance of such high caliber that he appeared virtually unplayable, at least for the duration of the opening set. Alcaraz operated with total confidence and a visible sense of relaxation that allowed him to blend aggressive offensive strikes with impenetrable defensive coverage.
“I am really pleased with how I played today because I think I was at a high level in both sets”, Alcaraz said. “I am happy to know that I achieved the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the match.”
Although Ruud attempted to find a foothold in the match by increasing his intensity, he was frequently a spectator to the variety of shots and some unbelievable defensive skills coming from the Spaniard’s racket.
Alcaraz maintained a perfect record behind his first delivery for the majority of the night and only dropped his first point on that wing at his 25th attempt. This single lapse of focus was the only moment where the top seed looked human.
Alcaraz advances to face Norrie in the final eight
The statistical reality of the match underscored the gap between the two players on the night. Alcaraz struck 33 winners out of the 128 total points played and lost only 9 points on his own serve throughout the entire contest.
While the first set was a rout, Ruud’s ability to reach a second-set tie-break was an extraordinary performance in this context. The Norwegian was under such pressure from the Alcaraz depth that he was forced to play half-volleys from the baseline instead of his regular groundstrokes. Although Ruud showed great tenacity to stay competitive, Alcaraz reasserted his authority in the tie-break to close out the match in a big smile.
This victory secures a quarterfinal meeting against Englishman Cameron Norrie, the No 27 seed, who advanced after beating Rinky Hijikata after having dispatched Alex De Minaur and Mackenzie McDonald. “I hope to play at the same level in the next round”, Alcaraz said. “It will be a difficult one against Cam because we have had great battles and I lost the last one (at the Rolex Paris Masters), so I really want to take my revenge.”
