Boisson’ Roland-Garros story ends in the first round one year on, dismantled in straight sets by Kalinskaya

Loïs Boisson, the Frenchwoman whose run to the semi-finals as a world No. 361 wild card was one of the great Roland-Garros stories of the past decade, exited the tournament one year on in straight sets, beaten 6-2, 6-2 by Russian 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya on Tuesday evening.

Boisson was defending 770 points from her 2025 run, and the loss will push her down from world No. 50 to around No. 148 when the new rankings are published in two weeks.

The gap between the 23-year-old from Dijon’s 2025 form and what she produced on Tuesday was the same gap any first-round opponent of the No. 22 seed would find on a hot Paris evening. Kalinskaya, ranked No. 24 in the world, struck the ball cleanly and consistently, and Boisson never settled.

Kalinskaya landed 74 per cent of her first serves to Boisson’s 48 and won 73 per cent of her second-serve points to the Frenchwoman’s 19. She broke six times in nine chances and won 67 per cent of her points at the net.

Boisson, who had ridden her resilience to three top-30 wins a year ago, finished with 24 unforced errors to her opponent’s 15 and faced match point on the Kalinskaya serve in the closing game. She saved four of them. The fifth ended the match – and the 12-month sequel.

For Kalinskaya, the win was her first at Roland-Garros in two years, a reminder of the level the 26-year-old has when her serve is finding lines and her ball-striking is clean. She moves into a second-round meeting with compatriot Alina Korneeva.
