Majchrzak topples Medvedev to reach a maiden ATP final

Pole Kamil Majchrzak reached the first ATP final of his career on Saturday evening, the world No 76 seeing off Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (4), 6-1 at the Libéma Open.

Majchrzak edged a tight opening set on the tie-break and then pulled clear, dropping just one game in the second to close out the biggest week of his career in style. It was his second win over a top-10 opponent at the tournament: he had beaten Canadian top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime (6-4, 6-3) the previous day, a result that underlined the form he carried into the semi-final.

The Pole’s run to the final has been built on resilience. He came through a three-set battle against Finn Otto Virtanen (6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4)) and dismissed Australian James McCabe (6-0, 6-3) before his victories over Auger-Aliassime and Medvedev.

The Russian, ranked No 8, had reached the last four by beating Croat Marin Cilic (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) and surviving a three-set test against Dutchman Thijs Boogaard (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6)).

Majchrzak will face Australian second seed Alex de Minaur, the world No 6, in Sunday’s final.
