American Carol Young Suh Lee claims maiden WTA 125 title in Warsaw after toppling seed No. 1 Jacquemot

Carol Young Suh Lee won her first WTA 125 title on Saturday, beating Czech Gabriela Knutson 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the Polish Open in Warsaw, on clay. It was the biggest title of the 24-year-old’s career and the highlight of a run that began with an opening-round upset of top seed Elsa Jacquemot.

Lee, ranked No. 162, is the only ranked WTA player from the Northern Mariana Islands, and in 2019 became the first player from the territory to compete in a junior Grand Slam, at the Australian Open.

A former college standout at Georgia Tech, she won five ITF singles titles in 2025 before breaking through at this level in the Warsaw T-Mobile Polish Open. Her run through the draw included wins over Frenchwoman Jacquemot, the top seed, 6-4, 6-4, Czech Vendula Valdmannova 6-2, 6-2, and Polish wild card Weronika Falkowska 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1, before she recovered from a set down to beat Belarusian Aliona Falei 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 16.

Knutson, ranked No. 217, also beat a top seed on her way to the final, ousting Germany’s Ella Seidel, seeded second, 6-3, 6-4. The Czech had earlier defeated Bulgarian Elizara Yaneva 7-6 (4), 6-2 and Lithuanian Justina Mikulskyte 6-2, 6-4, before adding Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-finals.
